Always August Designs specializes in craftsman style woodwork (indoor and outdoor) that is influenced by the Arts & Crafts period as well as nautical nostalgia. But owner Kurt Swanson also enjoys being challenged by unique customer requests for custom woodworking. Always August can design and build custom furniture for home and furnishing—including dining sets, couches, side tables, Adirondack chairs, stairway railings and much more—as well as unique decorative art and other items that require a handcrafted touch.

Inspired by his top-20 finish at ArtPrize 7 in Grand Rapids in 2015, Kurt decided to end his 30-year career in the tool and die industry to pursue his passion of working with wood. His entry in ArtPrize 7, called “The Race,” consisted of three full-scale Schwinn Stingray bicycles made entirely out of wood. Yes, even the gears, chains, and spokes! He was also one of four feature artists at the Oliver Art Center’s "Furniture, Fiber, Photography, and Sculpture" exhibition in Frankfort, MI in January of 2017.
